1:1 Pilates near Basingstoke: matwork sessions in Overton with Lucy Hughes

One teacher, one mat, and an hour that's entirely yours. Lucy Hughes teaches 1:1 matwork Pilates at Overton and North Waltham Osteopathy on Tuesdays, with appointments from 10:15. A 60-minute session is £55, and a 30-minute Introduction to Pilates is £35. Both can be booked online. We're in Overton, about 8 miles (under 20 minutes by car) from Basingstoke.

How much is 1:1 Pilates near Basingstoke?
A 60-minute 1:1 matwork Pilates session with Lucy Hughes at Overton and North Waltham Osteopathy costs £55, and a 30-minute Introduction to Pilates costs £35. Both can be booked online. A 2:1 session for two people is £80 for 60 minutes and is arranged with the clinic. Sessions run on Tuesdays at Shire House, Waltham Road, Overton.

What is the difference between 1:1 Pilates and a Pilates class?
In a 1:1 session the instructor works only with you, so the pace, exercises and set-up are chosen around you. In a class, one teacher guides a group through the same sequence, with options for different levels. Classes usually cost less per session; 1:1 gives more individual attention. Our clinic offers 1:1 matwork sessions, not group classes.

What happens in a first 1:1 Pilates session?
A first 1:1 session starts with a short chat about your health, any injuries and what you want from Pilates. Lucy then guides you through breathing and set-up, followed by matwork exercises adapted to you, and finishes with a few exercises to practise between sessions. Every session is tailored to your own health and goals. The 30-minute Introduction covers the basics at an easy pace.

What 1:1 Pilates is (and what it isn't)

It’s you and Lucy, on a mat, in a quiet room at the clinic. All the equipment is provided. Sessions are matwork only: there’s no reformer machine, and it isn’t a group class. Pilates here is exercise taught one to one, not a medical treatment.

Pilates is a structured form of exercise that works on strength, control and the way you move. It can sit alongside other care, such as osteopathy, and sessions can be shaped around your everyday activities, sports and hobbies.

Your instructor: Lucy Hughes

Lucy came to Pilates after a back problem of her own, which she worked on through a 6-week NHS Pilates course. She grew passionate about sharing it, and left a leading strategy role to train as a teacher. She holds the Body Control Pilates Level 3 Matwork qualification and is a member of CIMSPA, the professional body for sport and physical activity.

Lucy is a Pilates instructor. She isn’t an osteopath or a physiotherapist, and her sessions are separate from the clinic’s osteopathy.

All sessions are on Tuesdays, with appointments from 10:15. You don’t need to see an osteopath first: the Introduction and the 60-minute session can both be booked directly. Every session is pay as you go, with no subscriptions or pre-paid packages. Pay by cash or card. The cancellation policy applies to Pilates sessions too, so please read it before you book.

Introduction to Pilates (30 minutes, £35)

A shorter, gentler first step. Lucy covers breathing, how to set up on the mat and a few basic exercises, so you know what a full session involves before you commit to one. It suits complete beginners, people who feel unsure, and anyone who’d like to try before booking an hour.

Your first 60-minute session

  1. A chat. What you’d like from Pilates, any injuries or health conditions, and how active you are now.
  2. Set-up and breathing. How to position yourself on the mat and breathe through the movements.
  3. Exercises, adapted to you. Lucy chooses and adjusts each exercise around you and explains as you go.
  4. Exercises to take home. A few you can practise between sessions.
  5. Next steps. Whether, and when, you’d like another session. There’s no pressure to book a block.

If you’ve been referred by Rob, Lucy plans your sessions around your goals and anything you’ve agreed Rob can share with her.

What to wear and bring

Gym clothes or comfortable clothing you can move in (relatively close-fitting clothes are fine, as is looser wear), and a bottle of water. You’re welcome to bring your own mat, or one will be provided. Please arrive about 5 minutes before your session.

1:1 Pilates or group classes: which suits you?

Both are good ways to do Pilates. The honest answer depends on what matters most to you.

  1:1 session Group class
Attention The teacher watches only you Shared across the group
Pace Set around you Set for the group
Cost per session Higher Usually lower
Times Booked to suit you (here, Tuesdays) Fixed timetable
Atmosphere Quiet and private Social, with others

1:1 often suits people who are new to Pilates, returning to exercise, or who’d rather learn the basics without an audience. You can always try both, or mix the two. We don’t run group classes or reformer sessions at the clinic at the moment.

Is it right for me?

1:1 matwork Pilates may suit you if you’re a beginner, coming back to exercise after a break, someone who prefers a quieter session, or someone who wants to learn exercises at their own pace. You don’t need to be fit or flexible to start. Pilates is open to anyone whatever their ability or fitness level, and if you’ve had an injury and would like a more personalised approach, 1:1 sessions are planned around you (please call Rob first, as below). Sessions are for adults aged 18 and over.

Lucy can see people who are pregnant, have recently had a baby, or are recovering from surgery. If any of these apply to you, or you have a recent injury or health condition, please call Rob on 01256 578137 to talk it through before you book.

Pilates alongside osteopathy (optional)

Most people book Pilates on its own, and you don’t need an osteopathy appointment first. If you’d like the two to work together, Rob Green offers osteopathy appointments at the clinic, and Lucy can plan your sessions with his assessment in mind. Working this way usually looks like:

  1. Osteopathic assessment. An initial one-to-one appointment with Rob to talk through your health and set goals.
  2. Planning together. Rob and Lucy put together a programme around you.
  3. Pilates sessions. 1:1 with Lucy.
  4. Review. Optional check-ins between Rob and Lucy to see how you’re getting on and adjust the programme.

This approach draws on musculoskeletal anatomy, biomechanics, pain science and graded exposure to exercise.
