What happens at a sports massage appointment?
Hannah starts by asking about your activity, work and anything you want her to know, then agrees with you where to work. The massage is hands-on soft tissue work, and you stay covered with towels except for the area being worked on. Wear shorts or loose clothing. You can ask her to change the pressure or stop at any point. Afterwards you’ll get self-care advice in line with current guidance, and a rehab programme is sent to you.

Your therapist: Hannah Lawrence

Hannah is qualified in sports and exercise medicine, sports massage and acupuncture, and currently training towards physiotherapy. She is not a physiotherapist. She is insured with Balens.

Alongside her clinic work, Hannah works within an NHS Community Therapy Team, where she has experience supporting people with rehabilitation, mobility and long-term condition management.

She can also use acupuncture and dry needling within your appointment, if you’d both like to, at no extra fee.

Techniques Hannah uses

Alongside sports massage, the following are used where appropriate within your appointment. They’re included in the same £55 appointment, with no separate price.

  • Trigger point therapy: sustained pressure on specific tight spots within a muscle.
  • Myofascial release: slow, sustained pressure and stretch applied to the connective tissue (fascia) around the muscles.
  • PNF and MET stretching: assisted stretches where you gently contract a muscle against Hannah’s hand, then relax into the stretch.
  • Deep tissue massage: slower, firmer pressure into the deeper layers of muscle, always agreed with you.

Who books sports massage

You don’t need to be an athlete. Hannah’s clients include runners, gym-goers and club players fitting an hour around training, people with physical jobs, and desk workers and drivers who want a hands-on hour at the end of the week.

How Hannah works

Appointments are tailored to you and take place in a calm, clinical setting. Hannah has a strong interest in recovery and long-term body care, so she looks at the whole person, not only the area that’s bothering you.

Sports massage or deep tissue massage?

Sports massage is hands-on massage of the muscles and soft tissues, usually focused on the areas you use most in your sport, training or work. “Deep tissue” describes massage with slower, firmer pressure into the deeper layers of muscle. The two overlap, and Hannah offers both. Whichever you book, the pressure is always agreed with you.

How sports massage works

Massage affects the body in several ways, and researchers have studied a number of them. Responses differ from person to person, so please read this as a description of what has been studied, not a promise of any particular result.

  • The nervous system: massage stimulates nerve receptors in the skin and muscles, which send signals to the brain.
  • Body chemistry: studies have looked at changes in stress hormones such as cortisol, and in endorphins, the body’s own chemical messengers linked with mood.
  • Tissue: researchers have also looked at how massage may affect chemicals in muscle and the surrounding tissue, and proteins and neuropeptides that signal cells to repair tissue.

Before you book

Please give Rob a call on 01256 578137 before booking if you have any of the following, so he can check whether sports massage is suitable for you at the moment:

  • a recent injury, or swelling you haven’t had checked
  • numbness or pins and needles
  • a history of blood clots, or you take blood-thinning medicine
  • a skin condition or infection in the area
  • a pregnancy
  • anything else you’re unsure about

If you’d prefer to be assessed first, Rob Green offers osteopathy appointments at the clinic.

Acupuncture within appointments

Hannah can include acupuncture and dry needling within a sports massage appointment if it suits you both. There’s no separate acupuncture appointment and it doesn’t change the £55 fee. Find out more about acupuncture and dry needling.
