An osteopathy appointment at Overton and North Waltham Osteopathy costs £60 for 45 minutes, for both the first appointment and follow-ups. Every appointment is pay as you go, with no subscriptions or pre-paid packages. A free 15-minute telehealth consultation and a free 15-minute in-person consultation (its own appointment type when you book) are both available before you book a full appointment. Home visit prices depend on distance. Insurers recognising the clinic include AXA Health, Aviva, WPA, Vitality, Allianz, Medicash and Cigna. Some insurers can be billed directly.

How many osteopathy sessions will I need?
It depends on you and your problem. I’ll give you an honest idea at your first visit and won’t book more sessions than you need.

Do I need a GP referral to see an osteopath?
No. You can book an osteopath directly, though some private health insurers ask for a GP referral before they pay. If you have back pain with numbness or weakness in both legs, or changes in bladder or bowel control, call 999 or go to A&E rather than waiting.

Home visits are for people who can’t easily reach the clinic for physical or emotional reasons. I visit up to 12 miles away, which covers Basingstoke. Visits are pre-booked; the price depends on distance, so please ask. Relatives and carers can call on someone’s behalf.

Online video consultations run through Cliniko’s built-in telehealth and suit advice, exercise guidance and progress reviews; I’ll tell you honestly if you need to be seen in person.

Hands-on techniques (soft-tissue work, stretching, articulation and, with your agreement, manipulation) plus exercise and advice, in line with NICE low back pain guidance (NG59) that manual therapy should be part of a package including exercise. Rehabilitation sessions are also available.

These are UK-wide findings about osteopathy in general, published by the Institute of Osteopathy, not results from this clinic. Everyone’s experience is different.

• Regulated and trained. NHS England recognised osteopathy as an Allied Health Profession in 2017. Training is a four-year full-time degree (longer part-time) with at least 1,000 hours of clinical placements, including spotting “red flag” signs of more serious problems and referring on.
• Patient experience. In patient-reported data from UK osteopathy, 2017 to March 2020, six weeks after treatment 98.8% of patients rated their experience as “good or very good” and 96.4% were “satisfied or very satisfied” with their care. (NCOR data)
• Side effects. A 2010 systematic review found mild reactions such as muscle soreness, aching and headaches affected around 40–50% of patients after manual therapy, most resolving within 24 hours. Major adverse events were very rare: the reported rate of major cerebrovascular events after neck manipulation ranged from 1 in 120,000 to 1 in 1,666,666 (median about 1 in 1,000,000). (Carnes et al., hosted by the National Council for Osteopathic Research) The National Council for Osteopathic Research also reports that in a study of osteopathy patients 10 to 20% had an increase in pain or symptoms in the days after treatment, most often after a first appointment, and that most soreness settled within 24 hours.
• Easing pressure on GPs. In an NHS pilot in four London GP practices, osteopaths working as First Contact Practitioners managed 97% of cases without GP input.
